If only I would have had that very pearl of wisdom yesterday!
The past few days have been a maelstrom of events regarding the move and have left me totally frazzled.
This is a play by play of yesterday's events:
The first issue is not one that I have had to suffer the brunt of. Poor Odie has had to get up and leave way before he is scheduled to be at work because he has had to go in and deal with HMO and TMO. The guy that we saw at HMO on Friday after our meeting with Hunt to schedule our move to the new house, assured us that he would have the "very short bit" of paperwork that needed to be done ready for Odie to pick up first thing Monday morning. Fat Chance! Odie sat in the office on Monday from the time they opened at 9 until they left for lunch at 11 with no paperwork to show for it. It seems that the guy that we saw on Friday is now on leave (translate -vacation) and did not get the paperwork done before he left. There was also a problem with the funds that they have set aside for people who choose to move themselves. Apparently the account is EMPTY! So, Odie was instructed to return yesterday when they open with the hopes that the problem would be resolved and our paperwork would be ready for him to take to TMO for further processing. Paperwork was not ready and they hoped to have it ready for him to pick up this morning at 9am. Poor guy!!
Meanwhile, at home, I was on the phone with the Post Office trying to get our mail forwarded to the new address effective the Monday after we move. Apparently, the new address is not in their system yet, so we cannot have mail delivered there until the problem is resolved. No biggie, to the back burner that to do item goes.
Next, I called our banks to have our address changed in their records to the new address. Simple task, right? Of course not! With the first bank, I got a chickie babe on the phone who wanted to know why I was updating our address if we do all of our transactions with them online. <insert head slap here.> After convincing her that it WAS important that they have our new address in the records, I hung up. The second bank was a little easier to convince but had almost the exact same question.
My next task was to contact our paper delivery service and have our newspaper subscription switched to the new house effective the Wednesday after we move. (We only get Sunday and Wednesdays for the coupons/ads). Simple process. Yay!
Just after I hung up with the newspaper people, my cell phone rings and it is the moving company that Hunt has contracted for the move. (Remember we are doing a do-it-yourself move). Apparently, when we did our paperwork with the people at the office, the lady had marked that we requested a contract move by mistake. After trying several times to convince this guy nicely that a mistake had been made, I finally had to threaten trespassing charges if he showed up at my front door to "assess our estimated household load size." I assured him that I would have the problem resolved and we would NOT be needing his services.
I called Odie and let him know to make sure that HMO and TMO were aware of the mistake and to please correct it. Problem solved.
Next came the phone call from the Cox (cable, internet, telephone) guy. Apparently, they double booked the technician AFTER I had scheduled my appointment for our move in day at 1pm and they needed me to reschedule......... Um, why not reschedule the people that were booked after me?! He wanted to know if I could reschedule for the same day but at 9am. After nearly 10 minutes of trying to convince him that this was not possible because we are not even getting the keys to the new house until 11am, he finally got the hint and came up with the 'brilliant' idea to see if the other people could be rescheduled to another time.
By this time I was vibrating so I decided to "take a break" from the whole move related chaos and feed the kids lunch and have my second cup of coffee of the day.
After lunch, I called the County Treasurer to find out how we update the dogs' city licenses so that they were 'legal' after the move. Of course it entailed a lengthy conversation about the zoning of the new housing and whether it is in York County or the city of Hampton and whether the address even exists. No progress, to the back burner this task goes.
Next came the call to the DMV to find out about updating our Driver's Licenses. You guessed it, address does not exist in their records yet so we cannot update our Licenses, vehicle registrations, or voter registration cards. Ugh! That back burner is getting mighty full!
Of course the whole Soap Opera of events between ourselves and the wonderful people at NJ department of taxation continues over last year's state tax return and the Homestead Act but that is not move related.
The final bit of chaos before I gave up the ghost for the day came in the form of a call from the secretary at Aubrey's school. I had called earlier in the week to inform them of our new address and to assure them that we were still within the same school zone so Aubrey will still be attending that school. The secretary wanted to know if I could please bring in a utility bill or other piece of mail with the new address on it as well as a copy of our lease showing the new address. After explaining that we are not even moving into the new house Until the first day of school and that our mail cannot be forwarded until then, she said that just a copy of our lease would be fine for now. No problem but I hope she understands that I am not dropping everything right this minute and driving the 45+ minutes to the school to deliver said copy of the lease. I will bring it into the Open house.
Once I got off of the phone with her it was almost 3 o'clock and time to get the kids ready to go to their Kids' club activity at the community club house. I was very thankful for the reprieve from the trials and tribulations of moving. I enjoyed watching the kids (Booter and Speed Racer) make foam picture frames to display their favorite summer pictures. Then I let them enjoy some much needed play time at the jungle gym while I enjoyed the peaceful solitude of the nice weather. When we got home, we took the dogs for their evening walk to the new house and back (trying to acclimate them to the sights and smells of the new house and yard). We ended the night with America's Got Talent and some popcorn. I went to bed feeling defeated and like I had not accomplished much.
This morning I woke up with the ambition to get everything that I knew I could get done without obstacles accomplished. I started the coffee maker and washing machine at the same time. While I enjoyed my first cup of cofffe, the phone rang. It was Odie. They got the paperwork done and he went to TMO. TMO did their little paperwork dance and everything was set. He also let me know that we may actually be able to collect the money for the move early according to the people at TMO which would come in VERY handy!
After getting off of the phone with him, I switched the wash over to the dryer and headed into the dining room to sort my scrapbooking and crafting stuff to start boxing it up. My phone rang again, and it was the DMV. Apparently, the address was submitted to record TODAY and I can go in anytime this week or next and get my license, vehicle registrations, and voter registration switched over. Great!
I was feeling pretty good about things at this point and over the course of today am proud to say that I got 11 loads of laundry washed, dried, folded and ready to be put away or packed. (Mind you, there was not that much dirty laundry. I wanted to get EVERYTHING in the house washed before it gets packed for the new house.)
The kids got Booter's room cleaned and played nicely with one another all day. Wow what a difference 1 day can make!!
I am off to finish refolding the laundry that my wonderful mooshey pup has unfolded to make a nest of and watch my Royal Pains before I call it a night. Goodnight!
Many of you are new to our little blog so this will be kind of like a prequel to our adventures from this moment forward. For those who know us, this will serve as a little update about what mischief we have been getting into over the past few months and possibly answer some questions that may be lingering in your minds.
First thing is first, we are still in Virginia and see no means of escape to far off lands anywhere in the foreseeable future ( and for those who are not familiar with military life that translates to approximately the next 48 hours, lol). Our orders to England were canceled because a number of reasons that included a health concern with Odie (everything is fine now), the position being offered to too many people, our loosing our "Lucky Charm" (more about this below), and a few other reasons. The good news is that we did pretty good with the 'trial run' and are pretty well prepared should we ever go through an actual CONUS to OCONUS move. We do have a wish list submitted with the "powers that be" so it is completely possible that I will be sharing the news in the future that our adventure will be making a move to a new and exciting location (other than our forthcoming move a few blocks down the road).
Second, is that we suffered a loss and kept a lot of it to ourselves. It was not that we wanted to hide anything or that we felt that people were not able to handle the news. It was more that we did not want to put anyone that we loved through the pain and sorrow that we felt. We lost our "Lucky Charm" on the same day that we found out that she was in fact a She. The doctors could not find a heartbeat when they did the ultrasound and determined that she had passed sometime early that morning due to Placental abruption. It was nothing that we could have prevented and we don't know if it is something that could happen again. It has taken a lot of time and tears but we have come to terms with our loss. Being the second time that our family has had a precious angel taken too soon, we struggled with the decision on whether to just be content with the family we have. After a lot of talks and a lot of soul searching we have decided that we are hopeful that our family will be blessed with the expansion of two tiny feet in the future.
Third, if you haven't already noticed from the previous (and future) posts, we are in the process of moving. It is only a few blocks away from where we live now but it feels like worlds away! The new house is literally twice the size of our current one and has a lot of "creature comforts" that have us very excited! We will still be in military housing and it will still technically be considered a Duplex but that is pretty much where the similarities end. Some of the perks include: We will have a real garage instead of an open air carport. Our washer and dryer will have their own laundry room instead of living in my kitchen. The bedrooms are bigger. We will have our own Master bathroom and Aubrey will have her own hall bathroom in addition to a "Powder Room" downstairs that will not require you to stand against the wall to close the door. Our dining room and kitchen are shared instead of our living room and dining room with the kitchen shut off from the rest of the world by heavy doors. The shared wall of the house is only the garage wall and is shared with their garage. We will have a land line telephone with wires run inside of the wall, not tacked along the baseboards and door frames. Of course like everything else in life, there are somethings that we will have to trade off for those perks, like: Our backyard will be smaller and we are loosing our big beautiful Oak tree. We have to put up a new wooden fence that is a lot more costly than the chain link one we have now. Our renters insurance and car insurance are going up slightly because of the zoning. We loose our mailbox on the front of the house to a "community box" down the street.
Some things that will not be changing are: Aubrey will still get to attend the amazing Magnet school she went to last year. We still have our good old Putt Putt and Bessie Lou (car and van). Vic and Panda are of course moving with us. We are still about 20 minutes from my parents and about 8 and a half hours from both sets of Odie's parents and about 18 hours from my beloved Treasure Coast.
This summer we decided that it was in our best interest (stress and financial wise) that we do a Stay-cation of sorts and we have found a lot of fun local things to do and see. I do miss my family in Florida and Odie's families up North and we are planning to make the trips in the future to go see all of them. But, it was nice to seek out some of the local attractions that we have overlooked in the time that we have been here and visit some old favorite haunts. :)
I am getting sleepy and have a lot to get done in the morning so I am going to close this post for now. Hopefully this was enough of an update for everyone. Night.
So it has been a little while since I last posted a blog and there have been quite a changes. I decided to start our little family blog totally from scratch and what better time to make everything blog-wise new and improved than right before we move into our New and Improved house?!
So without further ado, I welcome you to our little family blog. Here, we will share the adventures that we go on as we explore all of the mystery and wonder that life has to offer........
At the moment, we are starting to pack our out of season clothing and other items that we do not need on a daily basis in preparation of the big move. If you were not aware of the move, fear not! We are not moving very far ( quite literally a few blocks away)! It is in the same neighborhood but the similarities stop there, lol.
This week is pretty boring and chaotic at the same time. This week is the time that we have to take care of the business end of the move and make sure that our i's are dotted and out t's are crossed until our eye are crossed! We went in last week and confirmed with the housing office that we are scheduled to move beginning on September 6th. Does that date sound familiar? If you live in Hampton Roads, it should. It just so happens to be the First day of school! Did we plan on that being our moving day?! NO WAY! But it is a lot better than the alternative (which is to move in late October/ early November!). So, we are making the best of it, and actually kind of thankful that we will have 8 hours of not having to worry about what to do with Miss Booter. We do still have to worry about our two fur-kids getting into mischief but we have enlisted the aid of our wonderful Pug Nanny who has offered to Mackey and Panda sit while we get the big stuff moved. Her only fee is that we take her on "The Queen's tour" of the new house before we start bombarding the rooms with cardboard clutter, lol.
Today we had to submit our paperwork to the office that deals with the movers. We were given the option of having a moving company come in, pack everything, haul it to the new house, unpack it, and set up the big pieces of furniture- all at no charge to us (because this is what is called a "forced move"). Or we can choose to collect our own boxes and packing materials, enlist the help of family and friends and their vehicles and move ourselves- and get paid handsomely. Considering we still have almost all of the boxes that we collected for our almost move to England back in January and the fact that we have such awesome family and friends who have offered to help with the move, we decided to take the latter option.
We also got Cox scheduled to come out to the new house on the 6th and turn on our cable, internet and add our brand new house phone line. It seems like something that is not a big deal to most people, and is even something that a lot of people have done away with, but I honestly miss having a "land line" telephone. Our cell phone reception in the old house is patchy unless we are linked to the wireless router (which eats lots of battery!) and Booter is getting to the age that having unlimited minutes on a phone is going to be a must! I also went online and put in a Change of Address form with the Post Office, contacted our Creditors and gave them the new address, and updated our subscriptions to reflect the move date. I called the county to update the dogs' tags and updated their microchip information on HomeAgain.com and updated the Vet's office with the new address. We cannot update our Driver's Licenses or Voter Registration until we actually move into the new house. Same goes for contacting Miss Utility to come out and mark any lines so that we can have our new fence put up in the backyard for the dogs.
Tomorrow is a non-moving related day. :) The kids and I are planning to go to the pool (weather permitting) or head to the bowling alley (if the weather is not nice) and then we have a fun activity planned at the Community Clubhouse in the afternoon. Wednesday, we are making Jell-o Jigglers and working on packing some more boxes. Thursday, we are planning to organize and start putting prices on the items we have for our Yard sale on Labor Day weekend. Booter has asked if she can have a Lemonade and Cupcake stand at the yard sale and still needs to decide on a charity to donate the proceeds to. Friday we are planning to work on clearing out all closets in the house to get an inventory of our belongings before we get too much packed.
We took advantage of the Tax-free holiday weekend and have everything on the School supply list purchased, labeled and ready inside Booter's brand new (and really cute) L.L. Bean bookbag. Thanks to Grandma D, and Grandpa and Grandma C; Booter is all set clothing wise for back to school with plenty of new clothes for her fashion pleasure and new tennis shoes, dress shoes and even her first pair of "high heels" !
Phew! This moving thing, even a few blocks down the road, is a lot of work! I am off to bed! Good night!
